It is a fine, white or almost white, amorphous powder, practically insoluble in water. It dissolves in dilute acids with at most slight effervescence.
Applications*
Magnesium oxide is widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food applications as:
- antacid, alkaline buffer and laxative in pharmaceutical preparations (tablets, capsules, powders) as well as in mineral supplements;
- filler in the production of pharmaceutical magnesium derivates;
- magnesium source in mineral and vitamin supplement tablets;
- mild abrasive and neutralizer of acid secretions in toothpaste;
- absorbent, opacity agent and pH adjuster in cosmetic products or in dentistry for dental cement;
- filter aid and clarifying agent in food and beverage processing;
- production of magnesium hydroxide paste.
