  Magnesium carbonate hydroxide

Presentation

Magnesium carbonate hydroxide (also defined Light Basic Magnesium Carbonate) is a white or almost white powder, practically insoluble in water. It dissolves in dilute acids with strong effervescence.

It can be described by the following molecular formula:

4MgCO3 ∙ Mg(OH)2 ∙4H2O


Applications*

Light Basic Magnesium Carbonate is widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food applications:

Pharmaceutical: as laxative and gastric antacid. Magnesium carbonate can be used as a base in the treatment of dyspepsia, rheumatism and gout. It is also used as a mineral supplement. In dentistry, magnesium carbonate is used in the gypsum impressions from which dental plates are made.

Cosmetic: as mild abrasive ingredient in toothpastes, in talcum powders and face powders giving moisture stability, fragrance retention and flow control. It can be used as carrier in perfumes. In soap manufacture, it is used as a moisture stabiliser. In general, the magnesium carbonate is used as a rheological agent.

Food Feed: as nutritional supplement and anti-cacking agent in the cooking salt and as demolding agent in the manufacture of biscuits. It is used as magnesium and carbonate source in the soft drinks.
