Calcium Carbonate is a white powder, odourless, practically insoluble in water with chemical formula CaCO3.
Solvay produces Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) which is often confused with the ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and misunderstood as a commodity product and bundled in the same category of the GCC. However, every material has distinctly roles and different characteristics.
PCC is part of the FUNCTIONAL category of fillers, used to influence specific performances in specific applications whereas ground calcium carbonate (non-functional filler) is used primarily to reduce cost in many applications.
Applications*
Precipitated Calcium Carbonate is widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food applications:
Pharmaceutical
as Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) as Calcium source in Osteoporosis treatments
as API for its acid-neutralizing capacity as gastric antacid
as Excipient as diluent or opacifier in tablet coating
as Chemical reagent as a source of calcium for the preparation of other pharmaceutical calcium based compounds
as Chemical reagent as a pH adjuster or buffer agent
Cosmetic
in Oral Care as abrasive in toothpastes
in Body Care as thickener in pastes or creams, in face powders giving fragrance retention and flow control
Food (nutraceuticals)
as nutritional supplement (Calcium source in dietary supplementation and infant formulae)
as anti-cacking agent in the cooking salt.
