Commercial peracetic acid products consist of an equilibrium mixture of acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and water, together with stabilisers. Solvay manufacture and sell peracetic acid as a range of products under the tradename Proxitane®.
Proxitane® products can be used to provide high level disinfection / sterilisation. Proxitane® products can be used for decontamination of infectious pathogens. Peracetic acid is a known virucide and complies with WHO guidelines for SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome): 'Surfaces should be cleaned with broad spectrum disinfectants of proven viral activity' - WHO 28 March 2003.
Proxitane® 5:23 is the preferred product for use in the medical market.
Proxitane® 5:23 is an equilibrium mixture of 5% peracetic acid 23% hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid and water.
Peracetic acid is an oxidising biocide with very rapid biocidal action at ambient or cold temperatures at relatively low concentrations. It has broad spectrum activity and is effective over a wide range of conditions. The activity of peracetic acid is relatively unaffected by organic contamination compared to some other oxidising biocides. Additionally it is very effective against biofilms and microbial slime, of particular importance in many industrial biocide applications. A final point is that no build-up of resistance to peracetic acid is known despite a long history of use in disinfection applications.
